Paige has been officially credited as playing for 17 different professional ballclubs in five different countries. However, Paige is most associated with his time playing for the Kansas City Monarchs. History: The Birmingham Black Barons joined the original Negro National League in 1928. After that circuit's demise they became charter members of the Negro American League. In 1948 they defeated the Monarchs for the pennant with a 15 year-old Willie Mays in the outfield.

For one brief year in 1945, the Grand Old Man of the Negro leagues and the young future pioneer were teammates in Kansas City. The Monarchs' road uniforms in 1945 had a different color scheme (navy and gold instead of the traditional red and navy) and differing roster numbers than the home uniforms, with Satch wearing #0 on the road while Robinson wore #23.
