On that day, Chicago DJ Steve Dahl was hired to lead Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park. With fans shouting, Disco Sucks, a crate of disco records was blown up on the field. What no one expected was for the fans to rush that field and the day ended in a riot. This became one of the most extreme promotions in major league history.

As a promotional event at Comiskey Park in 1979, White Sox promotion manager Mike Veeck (Bill's son) dreamed up the event which took place in-between games of a double header with the Detroit Tigers. Fans brought in disco records in exchange for a ticket price of $0.98. Dahl and a crew then destroyed a pile of records, tearing a hole in center field, and causing thousands of fans to storm the field.
